Los Planes de Renderos, Mountain recreational area in San Salvador Department, El Salvador
Los Planes de Renderos is a mountain recreational area spanning three municipalities at an elevation with cooler temperatures than San Salvador. The site comprises three ecological parks: Devil's Door, Balboa Park, and Family Park.
The name came from Don Renderos, who promoted fertile orange groves in the region and sparked agricultural development. This early settlement formed the foundation for today's recreational use of the area.
Local food vendors prepare traditional Salvadoran dishes like pupusas and corn-based drinks at numerous stands throughout the area. This food culture is woven into daily life and draws visitors seeking authentic local flavors.
The area sits about 10 kilometers (9.5 km) southeast of San Salvador and offers walking trails and viewing points overlooking lakes. Weekends draw more visitors, while weekday visits tend to be quieter and less crowded.
Devil's Door comprises three large volcanic rocks rising to 1,131 meters, offering sweeping views of Lake Apulo. This geological formation developed thousands of years ago through volcanic activity and draws visitors for hiking and photography today.
