Cojutepeque, Administrative capital in Cuscatlán Department, El Salvador

Cojutepeque is a municipality on elevated terrain in central El Salvador that serves as the administrative center of Cuscatlán Department. The city sits at approximately 853 meters elevation and functions as the main governmental hub for the surrounding region.

The city received its status in 1846 and served as the governmental center of San Salvador Department at various points during the 1800s. This period established its role as a regional political hub.

Local artisans make traditional palm-frond hats that reflect the region's craft heritage. Food makers also prepare distinctive sausages using time-honored recipes with regional spices that give them their particular flavor.

The Pan-American Highway connects the city directly to San Salvador about 33 kilometers to the southwest. This road connection makes it easy to visit as a day trip from the capital or as a stopping point while traveling through the region.

From the peak of Cerro de las Pavas mountain, visitors can see Lake Ilopango, the San Vicente volcano, and the Jiboa Valley spread below. This viewpoint offers a panoramic perspective of the landscape that surrounds the city.
