Paz River, River in Jutiapa Department, Guatemala
The Paz River is a waterway in southern Guatemala that flows from the highlands toward the Pacific coast. It forms the natural boundary between Guatemala and El Salvador along much of its course.
The waterway was once called the Pasaco River before becoming established as the boundary between Guatemala and El Salvador through territorial agreements. This natural border definition shaped the countries' geographic separation over time.
The river connects communities on both sides of the border and serves as a vital water source for local farming and daily needs in the region.
The river can be accessed from several locations, particularly near Jutiapa where more accessible entry points exist. Visiting during the dry season offers better water conditions for observation and movement along the banks.
Several tributary streams and natural pools feed into the main channel, including Las Lajas, Amayo, La Calera, and Iztacapa. These incoming waterways create varied landscapes and habitats along the river's path.
