Puerto Tejada, Municipality in Cauca Department, Colombia
Puerto Tejada is a municipality in the Cauca region situated at an elevation of 849 meters. The settlement blends rural and urban areas, with an active agricultural sector surrounding the main town center.
The municipality was established in 1897 and named after General Manuel Tejada Sánchez. It grew from communities that formed along the Palo River after slavery was abolished in 1852.
Residents have practiced agriculture for generations, growing coffee, corn, plantains, and cacao as part of their everyday lives. These farming traditions continue to shape how the community works and relates to the land around them.
The municipality sits about 24 kilometers from Cali and is accessible by car or bus. The terrain is hilly and lush, so visiting during drier months makes exploring easier.
Freed people established organized settlements in Monte Oscuro, using the thick tropical vegetation as natural shelter. These communities played an important role in shaping the area and remain a significant part of local memory.
