Edificio Gonzalo Mejía, Art Nouveau building in Medellín, Colombia.
Edificio Gonzalo Mejía was an Art Nouveau-style complex that housed a grand theatre with around 4,000 seats and the luxury Hotel Europa. The structure occupied a central location where Junín and La Playa streets met, also containing various commercial spaces throughout.
Belgian architect Agustín Goovaerts designed the building in 1922, and it opened in 1924 as a modern commercial hub for Medellín. The structure stood for decades until 1967, when it was demolished to make room for the Coltejer Building.
The Junín Theatre inside offered Medellín residents a place to watch movies and live shows, making it a social gathering spot in the heart of the city.
The building sat at a central intersection, making it easy for visitors to reach from different parts of the city. People could enjoy theatre shows and explore the surrounding shops and the hotel facilities on site.
The final film shown at the Junín Theatre before closure was Arizona Colt in October 1967, marking the end of this architectural landmark. This closing moment captured the last moments of the theatre before the entire building vanished from the city.
