Tibacuy, Administrative municipality in Cundinamarca Department, Colombia.
Tibacuy is a municipality in Cundinamarca Department located about 87 kilometers southeast of Bogotá, situated within the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes. The settlement spans multiple elevations, with the current town center positioned at 1,647 meters above sea level.
Bernardino de Albornoz founded the settlement in 1592 on lands previously inhabited by the Muisca and Panche peoples. This establishment marked the beginning of Spanish control over a region with deep indigenous roots.
The town preserves ancient rock carvings in the Cumaca rural area, showing traces of early indigenous settlements in the region. These petroglyphs tell the story of people who lived here long before the current community developed.
The area is primarily shaped by agriculture, with local farmers cultivating coffee, bananas, tomatoes, and blackberries. Visitors will easily notice these farming activities during a visit to the region.
The original settlement location sits at a higher elevation than the current town center, showing two different spatial perspectives on the community. This separation reflects how the place adapted and changed over centuries of development.
