El humedal del burro, Protected wetland in Kennedy district, Bogotá, Colombia.
El humedal del burro is a protected wetland in Bogotá that spans roughly 19 hectares and is divided into two sections by a major avenue. The site sits at about 2,540 meters elevation and contains open water areas with native plants throughout.
The wetland is a remnant of a much larger lagoon that existed in the middle 1900s covering many times its current area. Urban sprawl reduced this ecosystem significantly before the remaining portion was designated for protection.
Environmental education programs at El Burro wetland teach visitors about the importance of water resources and local biodiversity conservation in Bogotá.
The site is accessible during daylight hours and can be reached by public transportation from different parts of the city. The paths are easiest to walk after dry weather, as wet conditions can make them muddy and slippery.
The site hosts more than 30 bird species, including water rails and blackbirds, thriving within the urban surroundings. These birds rely on the water surfaces and plants for feeding and breeding.
