Monumento a Los Héroes, National monument at Autopista Norte intersection, Bogotá, Colombia
Monumento a Los Héroes is a six-story tower with a stone facade standing at the Autopista Norte intersection, distinguished by an equestrian statue of the independence leader Simón Bolívar on its northern side. The building originally housed exhibition spaces that visitors could access directly through a pedestrian walkway connecting to the nearby TransMilenio station.
The monument was inaugurated in 1963 by then-President Guillermo León Valencia to honor soldiers who died during South America's independence wars. After more than fifty years, it was dismantled in 2021 to make way for Bogotá's metro construction.
For decades, the site served as a place where visitors could learn about the soldiers who fought for South America's independence through dedicated exhibitions. The displays told stories of military achievements and shared personal writings from Simón Bolívar that revealed his political vision.
The monument was directly accessible through a pedestrian walkway from the Héroes TransMilenio station, making it convenient to reach by public transport. Since the building stood at a major intersection, the site remains easy to locate from the traffic signals today.
The equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar was positioned on the tower's northern side and remained visible from many streets, making it a visual landmark throughout the city. After the tower's demolition in 2021, the statue was preserved with plans to be reinstalled elsewhere.
