Our Lady of Chiquinquirá Church

Our Lady of Chiquinquirá Church is a Gothic Revival structure in Bogotá's Chapinero district with a three-section layout, lateral windows, and a central rosette window depicting the Virgin. The interior rises to about 25 meters with blue cross vaults that create a soaring effect throughout the space.

Construction started in 1919 and finished in 1959, establishing this site as a new religious center for the neighborhood. Father Fray Juan Alonso Suárez guided its early development as a pastoral hub serving the Chapinero community.

Dominican friars lead this Catholic sanctuary that holds deep spiritual meaning for the Chapinero neighborhood. The veneration of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá remains central to how people experience and use the space during their visits.

The church is open during daytime hours for visitors to enter and experience the interior space. Its central location in Chapinero makes it straightforward to visit while exploring the neighborhood on foot.

Pope Francis elevated this church to the status of Minor Basilica in November 2023, recognizing its spiritual importance. The official ceremony celebrating this elevation took place in July 2024 and marked a significant moment in the site's recent history.
