Gachancipá is a municipality in Cundinamarca Department situated on the Altiplano Cundiboyacense. The administrative center sits at roughly 2,568 meters (8,425 feet) in elevation, positioned about 42 kilometers (26 miles) north of Bogotá.
The municipality was founded on January 1, 1612, on land previously inhabited by the Muisca people. This population was part of the Muisca Confederation, which was governed from Bacatá.
The name Gachancipá comes from the Chibcha language and means 'Pottery of the zipa', reflecting the deep indigenous roots of the region. This linguistic heritage shows how Muisca traditions remain woven into the local identity today.
