San José de la Montaña is a mountain settlement in Northern Antioquia located at approximately 2,750 meters elevation and surrounded by mountain ranges. The municipality covers about 173 square kilometers and is home to a population of roughly 3,600 people in this high-altitude region.
The settlement emerged in the 1800s when farmers discovered the fertile soil at this elevation suitable for growing food crops. The community gradually developed from an isolated hamlet into a stable settlement with its own administration.
