Contadora Island

Contadora Island is a tropical destination in the Gulf of Panama known for its white sand beaches and clear Pacific waters. The landscape features gentle hills across its roughly 1.4 square kilometers, creating varied terrain and different viewpoints throughout.

Spanish traders used this island as a counting station for pearl commerce during colonial times, which is how it got its name meaning 'the counter.' This commercial past made it a significant trade hub in the region.

The island served as a pirate refuge and hideout during centuries past, and this colorful history still shapes how locals talk about their home. Visitors pick up these stories when dining at waterfront spots or chatting with people who know the island well.

Getting there involves either a short flight or a longer ferry ride from Panama City, with a final boat transfer to reach the main beach. Wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection, as paths around the island can be rough and the sun is strong near the water.

The waters around the island are known for whale watching, particularly humpback whales that pass through from June to October. During this season, visitors might also spot large game fish like sailfish, wahoo, and blue marlin in the same waters.
