Cesar Department, Administrative department in northern Colombia.
The department encompasses 22,905 square kilometers of land between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains and the Magdalena River valley.
The Spanish exploration of Cesar began in 1532 when German commander Ambrosio Alfinger led military expeditions through the territories of Euparis and Guatapuris tribes.
The name Cesar originates from the Chimila indigenous word Chet-tzar, meaning calm water, reflecting the connection to the Cesar River that flows through the region.
The department maintains agricultural production of cotton, rice, and corn, while extensive cattle operations contribute substantially to the regional economy.
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range within Cesar contains multiple rivers and received UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 1993.
