Barrancas is a municipality in La Guajira Department that stretches along the Ranchería River between two mountain ranges on opposite sides. The terrain is shaped by the river valley and the surrounding highlands that define the edges of the settlement.
Spanish colonizers founded Barrancas in 1664 during their expansion into the region. In 1813, local resistance emerged when an uprising challenged colonial rule under the leadership of Eugenio Vidal.
The Festival y Reinado Nacional del Carbón takes place each October and features music, dance, and community gatherings that reflect how people here celebrate together. These celebrations bring residents together around their shared way of life and connection to the land.
