Catedral de Riohacha, Catholic cathedral in central Riohacha, Colombia.
The Catedral de Riohacha, formally known as Catedral Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, is a religious building with Romanesque design located at the Plaza José Prudencio Padilla in the city center. Its structure includes three naves, white facades, and a bell tower that rises from the main front.
Construction of the building began in 1835 under architect Juan Bautista Coluccini and was finished in 1852. It replaced an earlier church structure that had served the city's religious needs before.
The cathedral remains a central place where residents gather for religious ceremonies and daily worship. Candlelit processions honoring the Virgin Mary are part of the spiritual life that continues through the year.
The cathedral is located at Calle 2 number 7-13 and welcomes visitors throughout the day. Services take place regularly, so you may want to plan your visit around these times to experience the building at your own pace.
Local records tell of a 1663 storm when displaying an image of the Virgin Mary reportedly calmed the dangerous seas threatening the city. This story remains part of the spiritual identity of the place and the faith of the community.
