Laguna Negra, Glacial lagoon in Sierra Nevada National Park, Venezuela

The dark waters of Laguna Negra stretch across a V-shaped valley, reaching depths of 24 meters within steep mountain slopes at 3,480 meters elevation.

Naturalist Carlos E. Chardon conducted vegetation studies at Laguna Negra in December 1936, focusing on collecting specimens of the Espeletia genus.

Local residents share stories about supernatural beings inhabiting the lagoon, warning visitors about mysterious fog and storms caused by disturbing its waters.

The lagoon receives water from La Corcovada stream and connects to the Santo Domingo River, which flows toward the Atlantic Ocean.

The dark coloration of the lagoon results from dense reflections of reddish mountain slopes covered in native vegetation on the water surface.
