Laguna Negra

Laguna Negra is a mountain lake in Sierra Nevada National Park, situated in a V-shaped valley at 3,480 meters elevation. The body of water is ringed by steep mountain slopes and reaches depths of 24 meters.

The lake formed through glacial activity during the ice age and has shaped the high mountain landscape of the Sierra Nevada. Scientists explored the region in the 20th century to document its unique alpine vegetation.

Local residents share stories about supernatural beings inhabiting the lagoon, warning visitors about mysterious fog and storms caused by disturbing its waters.

Access is via mountain trails from the lower sections of the national park, and the hike requires good physical fitness. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather and bring appropriate equipment for high altitudes.

The name references the dark tones of the water, which result from reflections of the reddish-brown mountain slopes mirrored on its surface. This visual effect has inspired local stories about the lake across generations.
