Fonseca is a municipality in La Guajira Department located in the Ranchería River valley, framed by the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains and the Serranía del Perijá range. The town includes 32 neighborhoods, three rural districts, and extends across surrounding countryside.
The settlement became part of the Province of Santa Marta in 1773 and was later designated as a municipality of La Guajira Intendencia through a decree issued in 1829. These administrative changes shaped how the region developed over time.
