Mexico City Metro Museum, Transportation museum in Insurgentes Mixcoac, Mexico
The Mexico City Metro Museum is located at the intersection of Avenida Revolucion and Extremadura and occupies seven permanent exhibition halls. Visitors will find original construction plans, historical photographs, archaeological discoveries made during station construction, and artworks created by Mexican artists of the 20th century.
The museum opened in 2017 to preserve the history of the metro system, which began construction in the 1960s as part of a major modernization effort for the city. This period shaped the development of the transportation network that transformed Mexico City.
The museum displays how the metro became woven into daily life in Mexico City and how artists contributed to shaping the stations. The exhibition shows how this transportation network transformed the city and continues to connect people across neighborhoods.
The museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday, allowing plenty of time to explore the exhibitions at your own pace. On special event days like Museum Night, the museum extends its hours to accommodate more visitors.
The sixth hall displays Lance Wyman's original designs for the metro's visual identity system, including the distinctive station logos. These design elements remain visible throughout the city and continue to shape how people navigate the system today.
