Plaza México, Bullfighting arena in Nochebuena district, Mexico City, Mexico.
Plaza México is a bullfighting arena in the Nochebuena district of Mexico City, holding more than 40,000 spectators. The concrete structure forms a circular ring that sits 20 meters below street level.
Lebanese-Mexican entrepreneur Neguib Simon commissioned the arena between 1944 and 1946. It replaced earlier wooden structures that had stood at other locations in the city.
Bullfights take place mainly between November and January, with major Sunday events drawing large audiences. On Fridays, young toreros perform as they take their first steps in the ring.
The arena has several entrances leading down to the lower grandstands, along with vendor areas inside. Modern lighting allows events to continue after dark.
With a diameter of 43 meters (141 feet), this arena is the largest bullfighting venue in the world. The gates are decorated with sculptures depicting bulls and scenes from the fight.
