San Cristóbal Ecatepec, Municipal seat in Ecatepec de Morelos, Mexico
San Cristóbal Ecatepec is the main town and seat of the Ecatepec de Morelos municipality in México State, located in the central part of the Valle de México. The urban area spreads between the foothills of the Sierra de Guadalupe and the plains leading toward Mexico City.
The town carries a name from Nahuatl meaning hill of the wind god, pointing to its pre-Hispanic past. Here in 1815, José María Morelos, one of the leaders of Mexican independence, was executed.
The church from the 16th century stands at the heart of local life and shapes the townscape with its colonial architecture. Around it, administrative buildings form the seat of local government.
Connections to Mexico City run through several public transit options, including Metro Line B and the Mexicable cable car. Visitors can move around the municipality using local buses and shared taxis.
On Cerro Ehécatl stands an old stone that draws visitors each year on March 21st to celebrate the equinox. The ceremony blends old traditions with the welcoming of spring.
