El Tenayo

El Tenayo is a hill located within Mexico City that is marked by a large white letter 'B' positioned near its summit. The site features two churches, the Church of Carmen and the Church of Cristo Rey, and offers expansive views across the city below.

Before Spanish conquest, the Mexica people extracted stone from the hill to create sculptures and tools for their civilization. The site retained its religious importance after colonization, when churches were built to serve the growing communities in the area.

The Church of Carmen serves as a gathering place where locals mark important religious moments throughout the year. The community uses the site for celebrations that connect them to their faith and traditions.

The hill is accessible by public transportation, with several routes connecting to the base of the mount. Wear comfortable shoes for the steep climb, which takes a reasonable amount of time to complete on foot.

Since 1979, the local community stages an amateur theater production during Holy Week that tells the story of suffering and redemption. The performance takes place on the hillside itself, blending folk tradition with the religious landscape.
