Capilla de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores del Puente de San Francisco

Capilla de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores del Puente de San Francisco, Catholic chapel near San Francisco Bridge in Puebla City, Mexico.

Capilla de Nuestra Senora de los Dolores del Puente de San Francisco is a church near the San Francisco Bridge with a simple single-nave layout featuring Ionic columns, brick doming, and classical pilaster work framing the entrance. Inside, a Neoclassical altarpiece displays a cypress tree and images of Christ's Passion.

The chapel was constructed between 1699 and 1704 following the wishes of María Laris de la Vega, who wanted to honor her late husband and establish a place of worship for the Virgin of Sorrows. Over time, the original Baroque altarpiece gave way to a Neoclassical replacement, marking a shift in artistic style within the walls.

The chapel centers on devotion to the Virgin of Sorrows, a figure especially venerated in Puebla through daily prayers and personal offerings left by the faithful. You can feel how this spiritual focus shapes the quiet, reflective atmosphere inside.

The chapel sits at the intersection of Boulevard Heroes del 5 de Mayo and 14 Oriente, welcoming visitors during its regular service hours. Since it remains an active place of worship, plan your visit to avoid times when masses are being held so you can move around freely.

The original Baroque altarpiece was funded by the candlemakers guild, reflecting the importance of craft traditions in Puebla's community life. This later replacement with a Neoclassical work shows how the chapel evolved artistically while remaining spiritually rooted.
