Cholula, Archaeological site in Puebla, Mexico.
Cholula is an archaeological site in Puebla, Mexico, built around a large pyramid with multiple construction phases and numerous platforms. The complex spreads across a wide area with courtyards, staircases, and pathways connecting different levels.
The pyramid was built over many centuries, with each generation adding a new layer over the previous one. After the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, a church was built on top.
The site takes its name from the nearby town and served as a center for ceremonies where people brought offerings and held large gatherings. Today you can still see the altars and platforms where these assemblies took place.
Visitors can walk through 800 meters (about half a mile) of underground tunnels that pass through different parts of the pyramid and show its inner structure. Access is through the northern entrance, where you can reach the different sections.
The Nuestra Señora de los Remedios church sits right on top of the pyramid, joining two different eras in one place. From the outside you only see the church, while the huge pyramid remains hidden below.
