International Museum of the Baroque, Art museum in Angelópolis district, Puebla City, Mexico.
The International Museum of the Baroque is an art museum in the Angelópolis district of Puebla, designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito with curving concrete walls and folded surfaces. Large glass openings bring daylight into the exhibition spaces, while open courtyards connect the different levels.
The institution opened in February 2016 after construction began in August 2014. It came into being as part of a larger cultural project by the state of Puebla to present the legacy of baroque art in the region.
The name refers to the artistic movement that took its own shape in Mexico during colonial times and remains visible today in many churches and buildings across Puebla. Visitors see here how local craftspeople combined ideas arriving from Europe with native materials and motifs.
Exhibition rooms spread across several floors, reachable by wide staircases and ramps. Multimedia stations complement the artworks on display and help in understanding the themes.
The building uses flowing geometric forms and contemporary materials to reinterpret elements of traditional baroque architecture. This approach creates a bridge between the historical art movement and the present day.
