Fresnillo, Mining city in Zacatecas, Mexico
Fresnillo is a city on a central plateau in Zacatecas at about 2,100 meters (6,890 feet) elevation that spreads across a large territory. The area is known for its substantial mineral deposits that form the core of the local economy.
The city was founded in 1554 by Francisco de Ibarra and quickly developed as a center of silver mining. This mining activity brought substantial wealth to the region during the colonial period and shaped its development for centuries.
The Santo Niño de Atocha statue, brought from Spain, serves as a central religious symbol that draws pilgrims year-round to the city. It shapes the spiritual life of residents and features prominently in local festivals and religious celebrations throughout the seasons.
The city connects to major highways, railways, and air routes that facilitate movement and commerce in the region. Plan visits to mining sites and surrounding areas by using local transport options and being prepared for the higher altitude climate.
One of the world's most productive silver mines, the Mina Proaño, operates within this city and continuously extracts precious metals from deep underground. This mine represents a significant portion of global silver production and shows the ongoing importance of mining to the local economy.
