Rioverde, Agricultural center in San Luis Potosí, Mexico
Rioverde is a town in the central region of San Luis Potosí covering a large area with elevation between roughly 1,000 and 1,006 meters (3,280-3,300 feet). It functions as a regional center for farming and offers schools from preschool through university level, including a campus of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí.
Franciscan monks established the initial settlement in Santa Elena in the early 1600s, then relocated to El Palmar where Juan Bautista de Mollinedo guided its growth. This shift shaped the area's later development patterns.
The town's patron saint is Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and her feast in November draws people to see agricultural displays and livestock while local musicians perform. These celebrations show how farming and community life remain connected in daily traditions.
When visiting, it helps to explore the town during its November celebrations when many activities happen and the region feels more lively. The flat to gently rolling terrain makes it relatively easy to move through different areas on foot or by car.
Near Rioverde sits Media Luna lagoon, which holds underwater caverns extending over 50 meters deep and preserving archaeological remains from earlier inhabitants. These hidden spaces reveal clues about who lived here long ago.
