Tamtoc

Tamtoc is an archaeological site along the Tampaón River, covering a large area with over 70 structures dating back centuries. The buildings include ceremonial plazas, residential areas, and other constructions that show how this ancient community was organized.

Settlement at this location began around 600 BC, much earlier than originally believed. Archaeological investigations starting in 2000 allowed researchers to revise the timeline and understand a longer development of the community.

The settlement reflects a strong presence of women, as roughly 90 percent of the burials discovered were female, shown through many clay and ceramic figurines. These objects suggest women held important roles in this ancient community.

The site can be visited daily, with visitors able to explore the structures on their own or join guided tours available through nearby towns. Organized trips from surrounding areas often include transportation to the location.

Monument 32 was an astronomical calendar created between 1150 and 700 BC that shows the advanced knowledge of the Huastec people. This stone arrangement demonstrates how precisely this ancient culture observed and recorded the movements of the moon and other celestial bodies.
