Las Flores

Las Flores is an archaeological site near the coast of Tamaulipas that holds remains of a pre-Hispanic settlement. The grounds contain residential structures, burial areas, and ceramic artifacts that document how people lived and organized their community.

This settlement was established by the Huastec people and thrived between 500 and 1500 CE along the river delta region. It served as a port and trading hub before being abandoned around the time of Spanish arrival.

Couples were buried here alongside turkeys and painted pottery, revealing how people honored their dead and incorporated animals into their spiritual practices. The ceramic designs show artistic traditions that held meaning for the community.

Visit during the drier months from October to April when the grounds are easier to walk through. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as the site sits in the open with little shade.

Excavations have uncovered evidence of planned urban layouts, showing residents organized their settlement with geometric patterns. This level of planning was uncommon for coastal settlements in this region at that time.
