Sierra Gorda, Biosphere reserve in Querétaro, Mexico.
This protected area covers a wide range of elevations and climates across central Querétaro state. The terrain shifts from dry lowlands through oak woodlands to moist upland forests.
The region gained protected status in the late 1990s after local conservation groups campaigned for recognition. Federal authorities worked with community leaders to establish boundaries and management plans.
The reserve encompasses 638 communities across five municipalities, where 100,000 residents maintain traditional agricultural practices while participating in conservation efforts.
Trails connect different elevation zones and habitats within the reserve. Drier months generally offer clearer views and easier access, while summer rains can make some routes harder to navigate.
The northernmost tropical vegetation on the continent grows here in sheltered valleys and canyons. More than three hundred bird species use these varied habitats throughout the year.
