Grutas de Tolantongo

Grutas de Tolantongo is a cave and thermal spring complex in the Hidalgo mountains featuring multiple pools carved into the hillsides. Underground chambers contain warm mineral water flowing through natural passages and creating waterfalls throughout the site.

Indigenous communities used these thermal springs for healing purposes centuries ago before the site opened to tourism in 1975. The transformation into a visitor complex converted the place into a modern recreation center.

The thermal waters draw Mexican families who gather for weekend trips and bathe in the mineral-rich pools. This practice connects visitors to a longstanding tradition of seeking natural healing through warm springs.

The site offers multiple hotel sections, restaurants, and camping areas for visitors staying overnight. Bring cash since credit card payments are not accepted at most locations.

An underground thermal river with temperatures around 38 degrees Celsius flows through the cave system, allowing visitors to swim through naturally heated underground passages. This geothermal feature is unusual and makes the site a place where nature and water meet in a remarkable way.
