The population of 22,686 residents includes a mix of local Quintana Roo natives and migrants from other Mexican states, with Roman Catholicism as the main religion.
The municipality contains 143 distinct localities, with the largest populations concentrated in Isla Mujeres town, Zona Urbana Ejido Isla Mujeres, and Francisco May.
The municipal seat, situated on Isla Mujeres island, holds the position of the easternmost municipal administrative center in Mexico, 13 kilometers from Cancún.
