Houston Post-Dispatch Building
Houston Post-Dispatch Building, Neoclassical office building in downtown Houston, United States.
The Houston Post-Dispatch Building is a 22-story office tower at 609 Fannin Street designed in Neoclassical style with a three-part vertical composition and classical details throughout. The structure features a limestone and granite facade with distinctive architectural proportions that mark it as an important early 20th-century downtown structure.
Ross S. Sterling, an oil magnate, built this structure in 1926 to house his newspaper operations and printing facilities. At the time of its construction, it ranked among Houston's tallest buildings and represented the growing economic influence of media ownership in the city.
The building displayed its newspaper printing operations through large street-level windows, allowing passersby to watch the presses in action and see how the news was made. This visible production process connected the public directly to the mechanics of local journalism and media distribution.
The building sits in downtown Houston and is easily accessible on foot with clear sightlines from street level. A major restoration in 2003 preserved its architectural features while adapting the interior for modern hotel and commercial use.
The rooftop once held a broadcast antenna for radio station KPR, making the building a combined media facility that housed both newspaper printing and radio transmission. This integration of print and radio operations under one structure was an early example of consolidated media production in Houston.
