Viper, Steel roller coaster at Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston, Texas, USA.
Viper was a steel roller coaster at Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston, Texas, built around a figure-8 track layout on a structure roughly 80 feet (about 24 m) tall. The track sent riders through a vertical loop and a tunnel that wrapped around the first drop.
The coaster was built in 1981 as Jet Scream at Six Flags St. Louis, where it ran for seven years before being moved to Houston. It opened at AstroWorld in 1989 under the name Viper and ran there until the park closed in 2005.
The green-painted structure carried a dragon mural on its exterior, which made it easy to spot from across the park. That visual detail gave the ride a personality that visitors remembered long after their visit.
The ride is no longer accessible because Six Flags AstroWorld closed permanently in 2005 and the site no longer operates as a theme park. Anyone interested in this coaster can look into archive materials and fan sites dedicated to the history of the park.
After AstroWorld closed, the ride's trains were sent to Six Flags Georgia to be used as spare parts for the Mindbender coaster. Most visitors never knew that the vehicles from one coaster could end up keeping a completely different ride running at another park.
