Texas Tech University is a public research university in Lubbock, Texas, spanning 1,839 acres (744 hectares) of land shaped by Spanish Renaissance architecture. Long walkways connect the different campus areas, which extend across landscaped lawns and plazas.
The institution was founded in 1923 as Texas Technological College, beginning with a focus on agriculture and engineering. The name changed to Texas Tech University in 1969 to reflect the expansion of academic offerings.
The campus art collection includes more than 100 works by American and international artists, with sculptures, murals, and installations spread across outdoor spaces and building interiors. Many students spend breaks in these areas, where they can view the works up close.
More than 150 undergraduate programs are distributed across thirteen colleges, with specialized research facilities located throughout the grounds. The central part of the campus sits close to several residential neighborhoods and is easy to reach on foot or by bike from Lubbock.
The National Wind Institute on campus researches wind engineering, atmospheric science, and severe weather in specialized laboratories, which are among the few of their kind in the United States. Visitors can sometimes attend public lectures or tours when the institute hosts events.
