Sam Houston State University, Public university in Huntsville, Texas, United States
Sam Houston State University is a public institution in Huntsville, Texas, composed of several academic buildings and residence halls arranged around a central campus. The grounds spread across a large area with green spaces, walkways, and parking lots where sports facilities and administrative offices also sit.
The school opened in 1879 under the name Sam Houston Normal Institute and initially served to train teachers. Over the following decades it expanded its offerings and became a full university during the 1960s with a broader range of disciplines.
The institution carries the name of Sam Houston, the Texas hero and statesman whose grave rests just a few kilometers away in town. Visitors walking through campus can move freely and often pause at the statue honoring its namesake.
The campus can be explored on foot, and most buildings remain accessible during regular class hours. Outside of semester breaks you will see students sitting on lawns and in courtyards between lectures.
Austin Hall dates back to 1851 and originally served as a building for Austin Academy before joining the campus. The wooden structure has been moved and restored several times, and today you can view it as an example of early school architecture in Texas.
