Sam Houston Jones State Park, State park in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana.
Sam Houston Jones State Park is a state park in Calcasieu Parish covering more than 1,000 acres of land with water channels and forest. The landscape mixes open water areas surrounded by pine and hardwood trees that shelter diverse wildlife.
The park was established in 1970 in honor of Sam Houston Jones, Louisiana's 37th governor who donated this land for public use. Its creation was part of broader efforts to protect natural areas in South Louisiana.
The park serves as a prime location for bird enthusiasts, offering opportunities to spot up to 200 different bird species throughout the year.
Two boat launches on the West Fork of Calcasieu River give access to the lake and connecting trails for exploring on foot. The flat terrain is suitable for walking and water activities at a relaxed pace.
The area participates in the Longleaf Legacy Project to restore over 70 acres of native pine forest through conservation work. This forest type once covered much of the region and is being actively brought back today.
