Natchitoches, Historic settlement in Central Louisiana, United States.

The city extends along Cane River Lake with brick buildings, colonial structures, and iron-cast balconies defining the downtown district's architecture.

Founded in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, Natchitoches holds the distinction of being the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase territory.

The National Historic District contains numerous preserved antebellum homes, reflecting French Colonial and Creole architectural influences from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Northwestern State University campus occupies the northern section of the city, while the commercial district concentrates along Front Street near Cane River Lake.

The Cane River National Heritage Area includes Oakland and Magnolia Plantations, displaying French Creole cotton plantation structures from the 1800s.
