Balmoral Mounds, Archaeological site near Bayou Rousset, Louisiana.
Balmoral Mounds is an archaeological site in Louisiana consisting of three earthen mounds positioned across both sides of US 65. The mounds were built around 1300 years ago by prehistoric peoples and display careful geometric arrangement.
The mounds were built by the Coles Creek culture around 700 CE and served as a community center for several centuries. They were abandoned around 500 years later when the population shifted to other areas.
The mounds show signs of coordinated construction that point to organized societies needing many generations to build such large structures.
The site sits along US 65 and is visible from the road, making it easy for visitors to reach from passing vehicles. The surrounding area is flat and open, which helps visitors see the entire arrangement.
The three mounds sit in symmetric arrangement, with two on one side of the road and one opposite, which made discovery difficult as vehicles pass by. This unusual placement across a modern highway adds complexity to understanding the original design.
