Saragossa

Saragossa is a one-story house situated on a large property along Saragossa Road in Natchez, Mississippi. The residence displays typical architecture and design from a prosperous plantation-era household.

The property was established in 1823 by Dr. Stephen Duncan, one of the wealthiest cotton planters before the Civil War. It changed hands several times during the 1800s before settling into a long period of stable ownership.

The house reflects how prosperous families in early Mississippi displayed their wealth and social standing through the way they built and furnished their homes. Walking through the rooms today reveals the choices these families made about comfort, decoration, and daily living during the plantation era.

The house is located in a rural area outside Natchez and requires a car to reach it comfortably. Keep in mind that this is a private property and access may be limited depending on current conditions.

One family kept the property from the mid-1800s into the 1970s, which is remarkably long continuity for such places. This rare stability allowed many of the original features to survive largely unchanged.
