Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in the Mississippi Delta made up of bottomland forests, wetlands, and farmland. The landscape is shaped by waterways and provides habitat for many animal and plant species.
The refuge was established in 1978 to protect regional ecosystems from destruction. The Ben May Charitable Trust played a key role in securing and supporting the project.
The refuge functions as part of the Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge Complex, maintaining Mississippi's natural preservation traditions.
The main entrance is reached from Highway 49W west of Yazoo City by heading south on River Road. Visitors should allow time for exploration and be prepared for changing water levels.
The area serves as a major stopping point for wild ducks and provides winter homes for tens of thousands of them. At the same time, songbirds use the refuge as a stopover during their seasonal migrations.
