Hickory Ridge Cemetery Archeological Site

Hickory Ridge Cemetery Archeological Site is a burial location north of Big Lagoon near Pensacola that contains multiple grave areas with preserved artifacts. Fragments and remains from ancient communities have been uncovered across this area.

Carbon dating of burnt wood fragments from 1980s excavations shows the site was mainly used around 1450. This evidence points to a period of active use during the mid-15th century.

Pottery found here shows connections to Mississippian communities during the Late Bottle Creek and Early Bear Point phases. This helps us understand how the people who lived here traded and shared ideas with neighboring groups.

The site is protected under the National Register of Historic Places, which means it is carefully monitored and managed. Visitors should treat the ground with care and follow any guidelines posted at the location.

Archaeological evidence links this cemetery to a separate village settlement identified as location 8ES1052. Together these two places form a larger community complex, revealing how people organized their living spaces.
