Vortex Spring, Natural spring and dive site in Holmes County, United States
Vortex Spring is a natural spring and diving site in Holmes County that discharges about 28 million gallons of clear water daily at a constant temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The grounds span 520 acres and provide access to an underwater cave system.
The spring was founded by Doc and Ruth Dockery and grew into one of Florida's largest diving centers. It played a key role in introducing the Red and White Diver Down Flag that became standard for diving operations.
The spring draws divers from the region who gather here for night dives and underwater photography sessions. Local fish species like Koi and American Eels inhabit these waters and are part of the diving experience.
The property has a full dive shop, camping areas with hookups, and training programs for different certification levels. Visitors should check what equipment is available and which qualifications are needed before arriving.
The underwater cave system extends horizontally about 100 yards and reaches depths near 115 feet at the security gate. Divers can observe distinctive limestone formations that give the location its particular character.
