Moundville Archaeological Site, Native American archaeological park in Moundville, Alabama, United States

The Moundville Archaeological Site spans 185 acres and contains 29 earthen platform mounds arranged around a rectangular central plaza near the Black Warrior River.

Between 1000 and 1450 AD, Moundville functioned as a regional political center of the Mississippian culture, supporting a population of up to 3,000 inhabitants.

The Jones Archaeological Museum displays numerous artifacts including pottery, tools, and ceremonial objects that reflect the advanced society of Mississippian people.

Visitors can explore walking trails connecting the mounds, attend educational programs, and participate in Native American cultural events throughout the year.

Archaeologists discovered distinctive Hemphill-style pottery and painted vessels that indicate the presence of social hierarchies and trade networks in ancient Moundville.
