Foster Auditorium, National Historic Landmark in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Foster Auditorium is a multipurpose venue on the University of Alabama campus with seating for approximately 3,800 people. The neoclassical building now serves as the home facility for the university's women's basketball and volleyball teams.
The building gained national attention in 1963 when Governor George Wallace attempted to block African American students from enrolling at the University of Alabama. This confrontation, known as the "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door," became a pivotal moment in the desegregation movement.
The Malone-Hood Plaza and clock tower at the rear entrance commemorate the first African American students who enrolled at the University of Alabama. This memorial space reflects how the institution honors that pivotal moment in its history.
The building is accessible from various points around campus and easy to find near the main academic areas. A renovation in 2009 improved access and facilities throughout the venue.
During a 1955 basketball game against North Carolina, Alabama player George Linn made an exceptionally long shot from the opposite baseline inside this venue. This rare athletic feat remains a notable moment in the building's sports history.
