Holt Lock and Dam

Holt Lock and Dam is a water control structure on the Black Warrior River with fourteen individually operated tainter gates. The lock chamber measures 110 feet (33 m) by 600 feet (183 m) and allows commercial vessels to navigate elevation changes of up to 64 feet (19 m).

The structure opened in 1966, replacing four earlier facilities from the early 1900s. This upgrade represented a major advancement in river navigation infrastructure for the region.

Holt Lake, formed behind the dam, serves as a popular destination for local fishermen and boaters throughout the year. People gather here for leisure activities and to enjoy time on the water.

The best viewing spot to watch vessels pass through is from public areas where you can see the lock in operation. The facility is most easily accessible during daylight hours and offers good vantage points.

Alabama Power Company operates hydroelectric turbines here while the US Army Corps of Engineers manages dam operations. This shared responsibility shows how two organizations work together on infrastructure and power generation.
