Old University of Alabama Observatory
Old University of Alabama Observatory, Historic observatory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States.
The Old University of Alabama Observatory is a Greek Revival building on campus distinguished by its revolving dome measuring approximately 18 feet in diameter and a dedicated transit instrument room located on the western side. The structure maintains its original architectural features while serving new educational and artistic functions today.
The observatory was completed in 1844 as part of the university's early scientific infrastructure. During a Federal raid in 1865, it sustained damage but survived better than many other campus buildings that were completely destroyed.
The building now serves the Collaborative Arts Research Initiative, where faculty members work on interdisciplinary projects and engage with the surrounding community. This new purpose shows how historic spaces adapt over time while remaining centers of learning and creative work.
The building sits on the University of Alabama campus and is accessible on foot when visiting Tuscaloosa. Keep in mind that this is an active university campus, so some areas may have restricted access depending on current activities.
The building housed an original 8-inch Troughton and Simms refracting telescope for teaching purposes until the 1890s. This telescope was preserved despite wartime damage and remained an important teaching tool for many years.
