Old University of Alabama Observatory
Old University of Alabama Observatory, Historic observatory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States.
The Old University of Alabama Observatory features an 18-foot diameter revolving dome and a dedicated transit instrument room at its western section.
The Greek Revival observatory building, completed in 1844, survived a Federal raid in 1865 despite sustaining damage while other campus structures were destroyed.
The structure now houses the Collaborative Arts Research Initiative, where faculty members conduct interdisciplinary studies and engage with local communities.
The building stands at coordinates 33.2111 latitude and -87.5501 longitude, identified as Frederick R. Maxwell Hall within the University of Alabama campus.
The observatory maintained its original Troughton & Simms 8-inch refracting telescope for teaching purposes until the 1890s, despite wartime damage.
