First United Methodist Church
First United Methodist Church, Methodist church in Jasper, Alabama.
The First United Methodist Church is a church building in Jasper constructed with walls faced in Georgia marble and located at a corner of Third Avenue. The structure combines solid masonry construction with decorative stone elements and anchors its position through prominent corner placement.
The congregation was established in 1833 and built this structure between 1912 and 1921 as its fifth church building. Four earlier buildings dating to the 1830s preceded this one, showing the community's long presence in the area.
The interior features a remarkable stained glass dome with colored glass elements that gently filter light into the church space. This artfully designed ceiling serves as a focal point and creates a reflective quality within the worship area.
The building sits at a corner location on Third Avenue and is easily found and accessed on foot. The structure is built on a raised foundation level that you will notice when entering.
The art glass dome was assembled from approximately 30,000 individual pieces of glass, demonstrating the craft complexity involved in the original design. This detailed handiwork makes the interior ceiling a special feature that often goes unnoticed when viewing the exterior.
