Lane Park, Protected area in Birmingham, Alabama, US
Lane Park is a protected natural area on the southern side of Red Mountain, featuring woodlands and meadows at an elevation of about 700 feet (213 meters). The park covers a large expanse and offers different zones to explore and enjoy.
The land began as a farm owned by William Pullen in 1822, became a cemetery in 1889, and later took its name from Mayor A.O. Lane. Its transformation into a public park in the 20th century made it a recreational destination for the city.
The Works Progress Administration constructed several stone structures within the park, contributing to its architectural and historical significance.
The park has designated parking areas and easy access from surrounding Birmingham neighborhoods via U.S. Highway 280. Visitors will find ample space and straightforward entry from the main roads connecting to the city.
The grounds house both the Birmingham Zoo and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, two major attractions visitors can find in one location. This combination of a zoo and botanical garden offers diverse experiences within the same park grounds.
