Tranquility Bay, private school
Tranquility Bay was a private boarding school in Treasure Beach, Jamaica, that operated from 1997 to 2009. The facility was part of a network of specialty schools and employed staff members without formal qualifications in youth care or education.
The school was founded in 1997 and was part of the World Wide Association of Specialty Programs, a network of specialty youth facilities. It closed in 2009 after widespread public allegations of abuse and mistreatment of students came to light.
Visitors should be aware that this school facility no longer exists and today represents a historical site in the Treasure Beach area. Access to the former grounds may be restricted or unsafe, so caution is advisable.
The facility became known for staff using tear gas and other aggressive tactics against students, as well as prolonged isolation-based punishments. These methods set it apart from other institutions and contributed to its harmful reputation.
