Candler College and Colegio Buenavista, Methodist educational complex in Marianao, Cuba.
Candler College and Colegio Buenavista form a three-story educational complex in Marianao with eclectic architectural style and multiple entrances. The grounds contain sports fields, gardens, courtyards, and specialized academic spaces designed for different subjects.
The complex was established by the United States Southern Methodist Church, with Candler College opening in 1899 and Colegio Buenavista following in 1920. Private school operations ended following nationalization in 1961.
The schools taught Spanish and English together and integrated Bible study into the daily curriculum. This blend of languages and religious values shaped the school experience for generations of students.
The complex was originally organized with separate facilities for boys and girls, residential dormitories for boarding students, and dining areas. Visitors should expect to navigate through multiple separate building sectors across the grounds.
In 1956 the institution expanded and created a university branch offering new faculties in Pedagogy, Languages, Philosophy, and Letters. This transformation from a school complex to an academic center happened just before the nationalization that reshaped Cuban education.
